This is an older video of Brett but he talks a little bit about the music scene in SC and he is very accurate. And that is why we created this website. He predicted his future move to Charleston and his next stop is New York. I plan to do all I can do to get Brett heard and seen and hopefully on a national level before he is 27:)
Last week while I was at the beach I didn’t plan on making it out to any shows, but I just can’t get away. I went out with my group to the Wild Wing in Mt Pleasant after dinner last Wednesday for some drinks and was lucky enough to hear a familiar voice.
There are two doors that lead in to that Wild Wings and once the first one opened I heard Brett Treacy singing and ran inside to go greet him. This concert really topped off my week.
When I was in high school I played in a band called Iron Kid. I was the singer and was good enough to get by, but when I got to college the drummer and I started to look for a new singer that was really outstanding to help sing our songs. Brett was that man. We recorded one song and it is hiding on an old 8 track recorder that I have. One day I plan to upload it somewhere. Anyway Iron Kid didn’t really last that long, 4 shows I think, but it really got our feet wet in the music scene down here. You never forget your first time…playing at New Brookland Tavern and mine was with Iron Kid. Oh the memories, new music night with Tigerbot Hesh. Oh how things have changed.
Brett has since played in Wet Paint and he has always played solo. To me Brett doesn’t seem like the kind of artist that would play at Wild Wing. The things that make me love his live performance are the things that might scare the average radio listener off. He is intense on stage. He pushes is voice to its limit and his music climbs and falls from whisper soft to screaming loud. He is a master of anticipation.
A perfect example of this is in the song “As We Sing.” If you are fan of Leonard Cohen or Conor Oberst you will love this song. As I was playing this song my sister asked “Is that Brett?” She thought it was Bright Eyes. It is kind of ironic that this song does hint at Bright Eyes being that the person that this song was written about was also a big Conor Oberst fan.
Many of you knew Marian Carter and if you didn’t know her you probably heard her live at Village Idiot, New Brookland Tavern or one of the many other places she played in Columbia. Jeremy Kolmin said it best when he said this “Marian Carter was a talented drummer, an awe-inspiring vocalist, a concert junkie, a movie fanatic, an avid reader, and could play a mean guitar. She was a sister, a daughter, and a tremendous friend.”
If you click the link above you can go to Marians Purevolume and listen to some covers that she recorded for fun. The second one is Bright Eyes.
Here are the lyrics to Brett’s song “As We Sing”
the pages are worn
folded and torn
but I pull them out
to hear the sound
of your voice as I read
the words on the sheet
grows louder until
I hear your voice still
It goesthe first and third verse
as we had rehearsed
were mine to sing
so I start at the beginning
and out of the lines
becomes the time
we both forgot the words
yelling the chorusthe hum is so sweet
like the wind through the trees
and the flow of the sound
like a wave as it travels
to the shore from the part
of the sea where it starts
then it peaks as it bends
makes a crash as it ends
and your voice as it climbed
going higher than mine
you said you fed off of me
our bodies pulse to the beat
and we sing
Go out to Wild Wing next Wednesday and hear him play this live. I believe he plays it first so be there early. Brett plays a set of originals and covers ranging from The Band to Ryan Adams. And go see him while you still can because the word on the street is that he is moving to NYC.
Brett Treacy is for fans of Bright Eyes, Pearl Jam and good music.
