The Artichokes – The Artichokes EP
Genre: Indie-Pop w/ some synth
RIYL: The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys
Picks: Black and White, Somebody’s Hero, Sweater Weather
This five track EP from the Artichokes will be in rotation at WUSC 90.5 FM in January. The Artichokes are making their mark in Columbia after building a pretty large following in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Unlike many artists, I feel like their recording is a good representation of their actual sound. Lead Singer, Emrys has a very captivating voice which surprised me the first time I heard it. His voice has a slight scruff to it, which keeps the listener interested in the lyrics which are also intriguing. The reggae influence of this band is most obviously seen in the drumming and bass-popping of the rhythm section of the band, brought by Wade and Colin. Both of these guys are ridiculous musicians, and Conner’s basslines are especially amazing for someone so young. Daniel keeps the songs moving with energetic lead guitar along with guitar solos that are actually interesting to listen to. And Jay. The addition of keyboard gives a nice synth edge to the music. My two favorite songs on the EP are “Black and White” and “Sweater Weather”.
“Black and White” has a slight distortion effect on the vocals giving the song a bit of an edge. The effect backs away for the chorus. This is the song where I hear a similarity between the Artichokes and the Strokes the most. Although they sound like the Strokes, this song has its own sound.
“Sweater Weather” is just an all around good song. The lyrics are thoughtful and catchy which is the way they should be. The keyboard in this song is probably the best that it is used throughout the entire EP. It blends so well, while making itself heard. The song flows into the bridge beautifully for the conclusion.
You can find this EP at one of the many shows that the Artichokes will be playing this year and next year. You can also catch the Artichokes performing a live acoustic set, including many of the songs on the EP on December 23, 2008 at 4 pm on WUSC 90.5 FM.
What about acid? That is my favorite song, and Sweater Weather. They are one of the best bands though.
