Wednesday February 11th
New Brookland Tavern
Medicine Veteran/Becca Smith/Farewell Flight/Sleepy Eye Giant
Only 4 months ago Medicine Veteran was playing New Brookland Tavern’s new music night with Sleepy Eye Giant. Â Now they bring their show to headlining status bringing along a great band from Pennsylvania in Farewell Flight and one of our favorite up and coming female artists Becca Smith. Â Becca’s new recordings show just how far she has come as an artist and are she keeps on getting closer to the potential we see in her. Â Farewell Flight are playing a two month string of shows that bring them through Columbia on their way around the United States. Â We know that Farewell Flight is awesome because they have Allison Weiss/Nick Bays and Friends and Romans in their Myspace top friends.
Thursday February 12
New Brookland Tavern
The Brisbones/Ghosts of the Great Highway
If you haven’t listened to me the numerous other times that I have told you to go see the Brisbones do it this time. Â Perfect music to put on your boots, throw back a couple of PBR’s and dance to on a Thursday night. Â To top it off they are playing with Ghosts of the Great Highway whose name you have seen on our website numerous times before. Â Phil is one of the best singer songwriters in Columbia and it is only a matter of time before everyone is opening up for him.
Friday the 13th
Headliners Mainstage
Cats and Cobras/Shallow Palace
I have made it a point to never promote shows at Headliners. Â Here I will do the anti promotion.
You may ask, why do you have a problem with Headliners? Â They have the nicest stage in town and hold more people than any other venue.
Let me explain to you why Headliners sucks.
A) They cannot figure out how to get people in the door. Â If there is a crowded show at Headliners plan to wait in line. Â Often that line stretches far into the parking lot. Â You’ll probably miss most if not all of the first band and maybe even some of the second one. Â Sometimes they do the opposite. Â A couple of weeks ago they opened doors at 7 and started the show at 9. Â With nowhere for people to sit, this really sucks.
B) Â They don’t pay the bands well. Â Enough said
C) Their drinks cost too much and they always run out of PBR. Â Enough said.
D)  The music in-between bands consists of a playlist featuring AC/DC’s greatest hits and Nickelback.
E) Â They wouldn’t let me videotape there. Â You read that correctly. Â These were all local bands that I am good friends with that they wouldn’t let me videotape.
F) Â 93.5 Â I don’t have to rip on 93.5 because they are going out of business anyway. (Hopefully) Payola=crapola
G)Â Now you have to pay to park around Headliners.
So this Friday when you are looking for something to do don’t come see my band at Headliners. Â There are better things you can do with your 10 dollars and the money you would spend on a couple of drinks. Â Actually Cats and Cobras are going to go absolutely ape shit at this show so sneak in the back door with some mini bottles in your jacket and watch us release crickets, sling mics, throw guitars, shoot off roman candles, shake babies, cuss, drive big trucks and raise all out hell as we unleash the wrath of 1000 Dragons on Headliners. Â What a fitting Friday the 13th.
Don’t forget that you have to pay to park now and you have to listen to that thumping music in between songs from the other clubs around it.
headliners has long been my least favorite venue to ever exist. A few years ago I went to go to a show that I was REALLY excited about (I don’t remember who was playing but Heist was opening). The guy at the door told me it was 21+, so I plead with him and tell him the website said all ages, and headliners is never 21+, and that one of the bands playing isn’t even 21+. So they just tell me to leave. and I come to find out later that a bunch of my friends who were not 21 or even 18 got in just fine.
so in closing, fuck headliners. I hate them from the depths of my soul.
i could not agree more with the headliners post. 90% of the this venue books awful bands just to make a buck. all of the times we have played headliners we bring a decent amount of people but not as much as headliners would want us to bring. and the reason we cant bring that many locals out is because no one wants to go to this pile.
I still stand firm that one day I shall own Headliners. Await this day, Columbians!
i’ve heard the sound quality in headliners sucks it, too.
headliners: shitty bands, shitty sound.
Other reasons why headliners sucks a fat one:
-no 93 cent beers as advertised
-dave britt
-93.5 (needed to be said again)
I feel like it’s important to note that there are far worse venues than Headliners, so at least it’s not the only venue in town. One of the problems with Headliners is that the management has constantly changed hands and that is never good.
If bands don’t want to play there then they shouldn’t play there, if fans don’t want to go there then fans shouldn’t go there. That’s really the easiest statement to make. It seems that New Brookland has been getting some shows that would have previously gone to Headliners, so maybe that is already happening.
My biggest complaint as a musician is that the openers consistently have inferior sound when compared to the headliners. Guess that’s why they call it Headliners though!
The non existent 93 cent beer has always chapped my ass too.
