Before he developed crushes on any brunette that can sing, you may remember David posting something about Zelazowa and Indie on the Move. If not, Zelazowa is a great band with a great name, and Indie on the Move is a website they started that provides a huge national database of venues for bands. It is great for bands that need help booking shows, but it is also a great resource for local/indie music fans to find out about venues all over the great US of A.
In my quest to be the laziest bloggist on earth I managed to track down Kyle of Indie on the Move in a dark corner of the internet and snag an interview. I thought it would be interesting to learn about their motivation, future plans, and how people can help. By golly, I was right!
Sexy Stephen: How did you guys get the idea to start Indie on the Move?
Kyle: We got the idea while trying to figure out a way to avoid entering the “real” work market, hahaha. Through years of touring, we accumulated a lot of information pertaining to venues, bookers, markets, and bands and then it just came down to organizing all of it, which let me tell you, was no simple task. Finally, we came up with a design plan for the site, incorporated the info, and the rest is history.
SS: Is it tough keeping up the band work and the website?
K: The only tough part about it is the amount of time that needs to be spent working on both projects. Imagine having two full time jobs that demand extra hours each weekday and on weekends. That is basically every week. However, the fact that we are all very passionate about both projects makes it easier to put that amount of time in. Other than that, the two kind of feed off of each other in many different ways.
SS: What can both bands and fans do to help keep the website up?
K: All we can ask is that people continue to contribute to the site where and whenever they can. If you see a booker listed that you know is incorrect, write us and let us know that it needs to be changed. If you know of clubs that are not in the database, send them along with any applicable information that you know and we will add them. If you experience a technical difficulty, report it, so that we can have it fixed as quickly as possible. While we use and verify all the features and information on the site regularly, it is very easy to overlook a small detail here or there. With an emphasis on collaborative user involvement, our site can only be as good as the people using it.
SS: Any super secret awesome plans in the works for the website?
K: That information cannot be devolged at this time, hahaha. Of course, there are a lot of big plans for the site, some of which people have already witnessed with the inclusion of the “Gig Swapping” feature just last month. We are also planning to add a couple of features to make the actual city to city planning less difficult. Good things are just beyond the horizon.
So to sum up.
Indie on the Move: Great grassroots music website
Kyle/other guys: Great band with innovative ideas to help out fellow bands
