If you have been reading SceneSC for awhile then you have probably realized that we sometimes forget that Athens, GA is not in South Carolina. However, when good albums are coming out that need our love who really cares?
Church of the Haunted South is the third release from Athens, GA/Chicago, IL Alt Rockers The Winter Sounds. For those of you who haven’t yet heard them, their unique brand of vocal rock ranges from haunting vocal harmonies to fun pop jams, combining the best of the 80’s with the rock sounds of the 90’s. If you enjoy a different take on rock then stop what you are doing and give them a listen.
Their new release specializes in putting together upbeat tunes with dark lyrics. The combination is as powerful as it is intriguing, perhaps recalling the glory days of the Talking Heads. The third track, entitled “O’ Fear,” is a highlight, pitting satisfying choral arrangements and a danceable beat against an epic song structure. “Trophy Wife” is a solid single that reveals the potential of the album, it will hopefully serve for many as a fine gateway drug for this talented band.
The title and art of Church of the Haunted South may not seem fit for a summer release, but this album will take you through both Summer and Winter in the first two tracks alone. Just as grand while riding to the beach in your car as it is in solitude, The Winter Sounds have produced an incredibly solid album that will hopefully garner them the attention they deserve.
this review is awesome! these guys work really, really hard…..and, actually, there are sorta from Greenville, SC — that’s where the lead singer grew up and now lives. 🙂
