Weezer debuted two new songs at the Jisan Valley Rock Festival in South Korea last week. The songs are titled “I’m Your Daddy” and “The Girl Got Hot.” They are both terrible terrible songs. Every time I think Weezer can’t write a worse song, they do.
It has been all downhill since Matt Sharp left the band.
Lord. These new tunes really drive it home to me that I truly am trapped in a loveless relationship with Rivers Cuomo. I didn’t coin that concept however, and I don’t think I could sum up the current Weezer paradigm more eloquently than the writer who did coin it; Mr. James Montgomery.
I highly recommend his article “Why Can’t Die-Hard Fans Quit Weezer?”: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1574212/20071113/weezer.jhtml
I do have to say though – unlike many “die hards”, I believe writers should write whatever they want, as long as they want, until they don’t want to any more, no matter what anybody thinks of the material. I really, above all, want the artist to be happy. Fortunately, I get the feeling that Weezer is the happiest and most functional they’ve been since 1994. And that makes me happy. As a fan, I love visiting weezer.com and seeing videos and pictures of the famously estranged band truly getting along, playing “hootenannies” with hundreds of fans and having fun.
Unfortunately, that still doesn’t make it any easier to be a Weezer fan.
I guess we really are all a bunch of “little bitches”.
That article tells the story of my life. Weezer is a different band without Matt Sharp.
