Kicking off this Friday afternoon, Rocktoberfest at Awendaw Green will feature over 75 of South Carolina’s premier artist on three stages for four days straight. Proceeds from the concert will be used to buy instruments for the Charleston Band Instrument Fund. Four day passes are $40 dollars and one day will run about $15, but if you have a nice instrument lying around the house you can make a deal and get in for free with a trade, as long as it isn’t a kazoo. Camping is permitted so bring your tent and chairs and make a Columbus day weekend of it.
Now we know that there are way to many artists to see everyone so we’ll run through the list and highlight a couple to make sure and catch.
Friday October 9th
Cary Ann Hearst
Cary Ann Hearst is a little country ball of fire full of sass and a big southern voice. She is a pure entertainer and the last thing you’ll want to do is miss her set.
The Specs
The Specs are one of Charleston’s premiere bands, although listening to them you might mistake them for being from Manchester, England. They have a smooth sound that is laid back enough to let you enjoy it, but with the ability to get your heart pumping with a big chorus. RIYL The Verve
Dylan Sneed
About this time last year SC received a present from Texas and that was Dylan Sneed. He tours about 3 out of 4 weeks of every month, but when he’s not on the road you can find him kicking it in Hartsville, one of the most American towns I know. We’ve been a big fan of Dylan’s honest acoustic music since the first time we laid ears on him. I have the feeling he’ll do the same to you.
Hannah Miller
I’m not sure how many times we have to tell you to listen to Hannah Miller, but we’ll tell you once more. She is one of SC’s most talented singer/songwriters and her new EP is one of her best. Pick up a copy at the show Friday.
Saturday October 10
Josh Roberts and the Hinges
When you are ready to party on Saturday night, Josh Roberts and the Hinges will join you and some dark liquor and drive you feet to dancing and your hands to clapping.
The Explorers Club
They are the modern day Beach Boys with perfect harmonies from a coastal city. You might even recognize a song from The OC.
Cravin Melon
It might be close to 15 years after their prime, but Doug Jones and crew have still got it. These SC music veterans will be the highlight of the night with classics like “Sweet Tea,” “Come Undone” and “Silk Sunflowers.”
Owen Beverly
Owen Beverly has been a busy musician lately playing with Tent Revival in addition to his solo shows and his other project In Laws with Joel Hamilton of The Working Title. Whoever the songs belong to they are great. “Legs and Scars” is one of the best songs of the year.
Sunday October 11
Mac Leaphart
Mac is the former lead singer of Five Way Friday, but has more recently gone head on into the alt country scene. Kind of like SC’s Rhett Miller.
The Unawares
Back to the basics rock n roll not in the stylings of Leslie or The Specs. The Columbia trio play minimalist punk that relies on good songs to get the job done.
William F Gibbs
Will is based out of Greenville and plays a style of music that crosses genres to make something genuinely his own. He’s got a good voice, he’s a great guitarist and he has the ability to write songs and put it all together. What else do you need?
Monday October 12
Leslie
Southern dirty rock n roll. Enough said.
Danielle Howle
Danielle is the Queen Bee of it all. She is a legend, an icon and the person that it is most important to see.
