Special Message from Marry a Thief:
Hi, everyone. From the beginning, our band has never been a way for us to play music on our own terms, writing what we want, releasing things whenever we want, and playing things the way we want them. In two years we’ve had four solid EP’s released (whether physically or via the internet) and have watched word-of-mouth, bloggers and internet-tv spread the Marry a Thief gospel farther than we’ve been ourselves. It’s been a true gift to us and it’s been a very satisfying experience creatively — but mostly — it’s been a lot of fun. That’s why it is with a bittersweet taste in my mouth that I report we’ll be playing our final show as Marry a Thief on January 22nd, 2010.
You see, we never want to be those guys that stuck around way longer than they should. We see a lot of that and it drives us crazy. Once you get to a point where what you’re doing seems less and less relevant… your art suffers. We’ve never released anything we weren’t 100% proud of and we’d really like to keep it that way.
Well, since the music is what we wanted… why the break up? The sad truth of what we do is that making the music sound good is a small part of what we go through as a band. There’re tours that don’t happen. There’re journalists that would rather lift things off of your myspace and make cute puns than actually write about what you’re doing. There is a shitty economy. There’s an oversaturation of bands. Kids are into a million things.  And finally there are trends that you don’t want to follow that ultimately hurt the furthering of your band. We’ve always done our best to cope with all of these things by joking about them… but the truth is they’re killing our band’s career. And we don’t want our band to die a sad frustrating death. We’d like to celebrate the past 2 years without regret. We’re selfish like that.
But don’t worry. We’ll all still be making music. We each have projects lined up — all of which are going to be great. So instead of one project from us you’re going to get a bunch. For now though, we’re going to finish our time as a band out strong. January 22nd, 2010 — we’ll be at New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, SC. We’re probably going to play everything we can freaking remember. We’d really like it if you would come have a good time and sing along with us. If you’ve got a camera, camcorder, cell phone, etc… do us a favor and share any pictures or footage you get of us. Nostalgia, you know?
Thank you for helping make MaT something special for us. I hope that we made something special for you as well.
All the best,
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Colin, Erich, Justin, Josh
