This Friday at The Watershed in Lexington, CherryCase will release their new EP with support from one of South Carolina’s premier songwriters, Steven Fiore. We caught up with CherryCase front-man, Jake Etheridge, and asked him about his ties to Srsly? Records, the new EP and his role on the stage in High School Musical 2.
Describe your music for those who aren’t familiar.
We try not to label our music into any particular genres, but if i had to I’d maybe say… folk/pop/rock? The acoustic guitar plays a major role in our sound as well as some catchy riffs. We just recently added keys that worked to add a fuller sound
How did Cherry Case start and what has changed since you started the band?Â
Freaking everything lol CherryCase was started 4 years ago with one acoustic song that we actually decided to bring back for the EP release show on Friday. It was just me for awhile and then Danny hopped on shortly after. For the longest time Danny and I did mainly acoustic songs, but now we usually squeeze in about one acoustic song a show.  There are now five band members.
Tell us a little bit about your new EP coming out this Friday. Who did you record with?
Mr. Charlie Jackson of Versus the Robot is who we went with. I guess the EP’s less of a recent project and more of a compilation of the past years. Welcome Back, Lethal Lies, and Marchmen were all recorded nearly 2 years ago while others like the Last One were just finished up months ago.
Is the new material more solo based or more focused on the band?
Definitely more band focused, but with a few solo acoustics thrown in. Actually Danny and I will be putting out an acoustic EP very shortly after this, so I’m excited about that. The newer full band songs have an edgier feel so that’s to come as well. I guess we’re trying not to limit ourselves.
Who would you say are your biggest influences?
That’s easy, ask anyone, they always say Dashboard Confessional. I’ve been into his music for so long that I’ve a hard time not copying it altogether. We’ve all got our individual styles that lend to make a unique sound.
What is like being involved with Srsly? Records? Seems like a really cool collective of bands to be linked with.
Srsly Records has definitely helped out tremendously! They’ve put on great shows for us and worked to give us plenty of publicity. They really work hard for us. We love Bakari.
Who are some of your favorite SC or regional artist?
The legendary Marry a Thief…RIP. Steven Fiore, The Dirt and the Flood, Owen Beverly. We’ve had the privelage of playing with many great local bands, too many to name.
What was it like portraying Zac Effron in High School Musical 2? Did you get to boss around Bakari?Â
It was a blast! Met some really great people and had a really great time. Who doesn’t get to boss Bakari around at some point?
