I went to Snug Harbor in Charlotte Saturday night with my buddies BK and Will to check out Japandroids on their tour through the south with A Sunny Day In Glasgow from Philadelphia. The show was sold out, but really not that crowded. Probably sold out by fire code standards, but who follows those?
Weekenders from Charlotte opened up the night with a special appearance from Green Man. They fit the same guitarist, drummer lineup as Japandroids and switched off singing, but that was about where the similarities ended. They sounded like a stripped down version of Ozma or The Rentals at times and at times a quirky/vampireish version of The White Stripes. Highlights were spotting Bo White from Yardwork (blippity). He recorded my first album when I was in high school. Back when recording on cassettes wasn’t just indie, it was about the only affordable way.
Next up was A Sunny Day in Glasgow. They had two total babes for singers and sounded kind of like a better version of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Total dreamy deskpop music based out of Reason and Logic. These guys and gals have a couple of more shows and then are taking off overseas. Oh yeah, their bass player resembles Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear.

And last up we had Japandroids who were the audio equivalent of a foot long boner. It was fun, it was awesome, it was loud and they literally blew everyone away. These guys couldn’t have been more appreciative of the crowd and the reception they got as they rocked out for over an hour and put on an energy driven sweaty show. Think of what you wanted your high school band to sound like when you were rocking out, sweating your ass off during the summer playing through your Dad’s classic Fender amp.
