So I decided to start a new series of posts here on Scene SC called, Letter From a Concerned Follower. Everyone can email us at Music@SceneSC.com and let us have it. Tell us who we don’t cover enough, what you think we suck at and give us your opinion.
Scene SC,
I am a local music lover and have been for a very very long time. I think that the best talent and bands are most of the time found in the local bar or pub all over the country. And I have to say I love what you guys are trying to do here in South Carolina. We have some great talent that for some reason seems to slip through the cracks. As much as I do love what you guys are trying to do, bottom line, you suck at it. From what I have seen over the years, it is just a popularity contest with you. The only bands you promote or even think of are your drinking buddies. Now sometimes you do get it right. Austin Crane and Erich Skelton are unbelievable musicians and should be shared with the world. But what about Wylie or Erison(back in the day)? or CherryCase? (who from what i’ve heard was a huge hit in Nashville). I know you mention these guys but they are just as talented, if not better than some of the bands you promote. Either way I see it, bands around here would love help from you guys, but honestly, don’t need it. So if you want to get a little more respect from other people than just your friends, please start trying to look for REAL talent….

My response to everyone will go something like this, “It’s my site, I’ll cover who I want, when I want.”
Thanks for your concern concerned follower. That’s awesome that you just think I just cover my drinking buddies. That is actually pretty accurate. I get to see most bands in bars, have a drink and meet them. The the coolest part about Scene SC is the relationships I’ve developed from the website.
And really, I’ve always encouraged people to start their own websites/blogs if they don’t like the music I’m covering.
Here are some more local sites to check out if you don’t like ours:
Sons Club, Sound as Language, SC Hardcore, Music Matters, The Columbia Beet, About Today, Free Times
I’d be happy to add your blog to the list.
Check out our Youtube and Vimeo channels! We have tons of live videos.
To be fair, I didn’t start drinking with David until AFTER he wrote about me.
I usually drink across the room from David, we make eye contact, then nod at one another.
SceneSC covered and praised my former band long before I (or anyone else in my band) knew David and the rest of the SceneSC crew.
Once I got to know David a little better we did a lot of work promoting a lot of shows at The Watershed in Lexington. Usually bands and songwriters we weren’t personally familiar with.
I think SceneSC is doing a wonderful thing for the South Carolina music community and if you disagree then take it upon yourself to do better.
Thank you Brandon.
I drink with David just so he won’t write about me. Little known fact: when Dave began talking about making a website, he initially wanted it to be an homage to greatest human to ever wear the number 31.
I started writing for Scene SC just so David would write about my band. It worked like a charm.
didn’t know david until after he wrote about my band.
everybody knows david started this blog because he didn’t have any friends.
I am not drinking buddies with David, or any of the bands I’ve written about on the site, haha.
Dave is such a sloppy drunk.
Yes, this is true and the family is contemplating an intervention, but we always end up having a few drinks when we get together to talk about it and, well, we never get around to that discussion. But, one day, when we all show up at NBT, you’ll know what we are up too. Expect us there, all the Stringers, Collins, Kirbys, Fowlers, and Switzers by at least 2016. This target date reveals the urgency of our concern. Obviously, Moose rocks, and Meredith even more so. Keep up the great work SceneSC.
Peace,
Bentz
PS Do you remember the time you got close lined by Kevin McHale?
i drink on david.
body shots. all round.
Frankly David does a much better job of portraying an objective picture of the music scene than I have seen in a while. Anytime something happens to someone even vaguely related to South Carolina music, David knows about it and posts about it. So keep it up David. And I’ll buy you a shot.
David pretty much taught me how to drink.
David’s favorite SC artists/drinking buddies are Peabo Bryson and Samwell. Samwell’s hit song is actually about Dave. Still waiting to read about those guys.
Loving all of the middle school comments concerning the one point of your drinking buddies/local wannabees instead of actually commenting on the fact that Columbia is not nor will it ever be a music town worth even commenting on! Athens, Ga is not that far away guys, take a road trip & go see what real music looks & sounds like!Cola town will continue to chew up & spit out anything of any merit as it’s history proves!
Like I said, Athens is Greek for uber pretentious music scene.
We’ve got plenty of great music to back up our music scene.
David, all that Greek Emily taught you paid off. She is proud I am sure. I am blowing up your blog and its comments because you have been wrongfully accused and I am bored.
There we go, Mr. “Diddley”, why don’t all of us in smaller Southern music towns belittle each other. That’s not middle school behavior at all.
Let’s face it, if we’re grading the Objective Worth of Art on nothing more the number of musicians, venues or press outlets operating in a city or town, then we may as well just burn down any city that isn’t New York. Oh wait, I guess we’d have to discount New York too when comparing its scant existence and cultural impact to the heritage and legacy of Paris or Rome. Maybe any artist who isn’t able to move to Italy during the height of the Renaissance should just kill themselves. Oh… I guess that’s all of us. Oops.
Diddley, I guess you have a slightly bigger dick than Columbia, South Carolina. Congratulations. Why don’t you tally up Athens Georgia’s accomplishments throughout history go whip it out in Paris and tell me how you stack up. I think that folks like David, myself and the many other artists and musicians in our area simply enjoy taking part in a nurturing and supportive community, regardless of the number of human beings taking part in it.
P.S. Looking forward to playing in Athens next month, it’s one of my favorite music towns.
Dear Cousin David:
I think you do a great job and you should not have to suffer such slings and arrows of outrageous criticism. I also think you should indulge in nepotism and try to feature your cousin’s band as often as possible. This would be great. And, also, Marshall Brown is pretty damn awesome and deserves even more accolades than he has received from you.
SceneSC is awesome and does a great job covering the SC music scene. Don’t let the critics get you down cuz.
Your cousin,
Bentz
One serious comment about all this. David does a great job and cares deeply about the local music scene. As his cousin, I have watched this site grow and felt pride for my cousin (and Meredith). No one does a job perfectly, but this site is as good as it gets. Sorry that someone doesn’t like it, and another likes Athens so much, but David and Meredith and everyone else, keep up the great work!
