Growing up in Charleston, I feel like Leslie is a band that’s always been around. I’ve seen them countless times all over South Carolina (and now Tennessee). Their live show is packed with way more energy than you would expect from just a three-piece band. After loads of touring, most recently with acts including The Whigs, Bang Camaro and Johnathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, the band has released Lord, Have Mercy.
Lord, Have Mercy is their first full length record, which seems strange for a band who have been around for a good while. Produced and mixed by Paul Ebersold (3 Doors Down, Third Day, Green River Ordinance, Sister Hazel); the album was recorded and fully came to life in Memphis, Tennessee at Ardent Studios. More than one attempt was made at making this record but Sadler Vaden (Vocals/Guitar), Jason Fox (Bass) and Jonathan Carman (Drums) were not going to be satisfied until it was exactly what they wanted. Working closely with Paul they were able to craft a record of 10 songs and give their best effort for this full length.
Leslie unfortunately had their gear stolen in the later part of 2010 and had to use their album budget to buy new instruments. Determined to get this album out, they successfully used a Kickstarter campaign to help them raise the money for completing the album, and their dedicated fans helped them meet and exceed their goal before the deadline.
Memphis was the perfect place to record this album, and I believe they got the most of the sound and the studio for this record. When I first put it into my car I was a little weary, as I felt it lacked something in the beginning. But they pulled me in as it progressed and by the end of the CD I already had a few lines stuck in my head. “Mercy” and “Shine A Light” are tied for my favorite two tracks. “Hearts On the Run” takes me back several years (before I was born) with its distinct sound. “Touch Me” is the single and is much, much better live. “End of the Road” trails on for almost 9 minutes and is smack in the middle of the album, but worth it. Leslie’s specific genre of rock is not something I usually flock to, but I enjoyed this record and it actually hasn’t left my car stereo.
You can get the album on their bandcamp, on iTunes, or at one of their shows. So go see them live!
Leslie is playing the 5 Points After 5 Festival on April 14th in Columbia and their album release show is on the 15th at the Music Farm in Charleston. They also have a few southeast dates listed on their site and will add more as summer progresses I’m sure.
