Foley will be playing at The House in 5 Points this Thursday as part of the Scene SC Summer Showcase series. Their new album is set to come out in August and features the song “17” being streamed below.
1) Describe your music for those who aren’t familiar.
Our music is probably best described as passionate, dirty and honest. It’s usually not very pretty, or clean. From clean vocals to yelling, singing, back to raspy. Some songs are adaptations of scripture. Most of the writing comes from an honest heart dealing with my own brokenness and need for salvation. And then within that, my own struggles with understanding/grasping/believing and living out that salvation.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Brand New, MewithoutYou, Mogwai, Colour Revolt, Manchester Orchestra.
3)     What are some of your favorite parts about the music scene that you come out of? What are some things that you wish you could change about the music scene?
I love seeing bands get chances here in Columbia. It seems like there is always a push to get local bands on stages once you’ve created a good relationship with the venues. NBT has been very gracious to give us opportunities to play and get on stage.
I’d love to see more opportunities for bands to get together who are from different parts of the state — upstate bands playing more with midlands/lower state bands. Or NC bands and SC bands having better avenue for relationships. Encouraging more neighboring bands to play more shows together, to get their band in a different/new city. Â (of course this comes from us who have only played 1 other show outside of Columbia — so of course I feel that way)
4)Â Â Â Â Â How did your band get started?
I was writing and singing and yelling in my room when, I thought, no one was home. I walked into the next room and my roommate (our drummer, Will Grubbs) was on the couch and was like “dude, I like that, what is it?”… so we decided to take a few songs I’ve written and write full band stuff. Then our other roommate (Crawford) came in and wrote some lead parts. We decided we might as well try to record it down just for the heck of it. So we spend 3 days in a lake house and recorded 4 songs with Michael Mcfadden. They turned out dirty and simple. We got asked to play a show a month or two later and added Kent our bass player. Then we put it out as an EP for our friends. Sold/gave away about 50 of them in spring 2010
Recorded our next EP with 5 songs, just because we had them, and wanted to recorded them, so we did basically the same thing in a warehouse. Will mixed them down and we put out our second EP last fall of 2010, just on bandcamp for free download.
5)Â Â Â Â Â What are you most excited about for the future of your band?
Our 3rd EP release August 12th NBT. We have the privilege of playing with 2 other Archer Avenue bands who are going to release their EP at the same time. 3 EP Release Archer Avenue Showcase.
People have really caught on to our live sound, but we couldn’t get it to translate into our recordings. But with what Kenny has done we feel like it is a pretty good representation of who we are as a band live.
6)Â Â Â Â Â What was in like recording at Archer Avenue with Kenny?
It was one of our best experiences we’ve had as a band. Kenny worked so hard to push us, and to make sure it sounded like we wanted. He pushed us in directions we wanted to go, but we didn’t know how to get there without some guidance. It was a draining 4 days but absolutely incredible. We can’t wait to get back in the studio with him again.
7)     Who are some of your favorite South Carolina or Regional bands to play with? What band/bands do you think your fans should check out?
We played with The Lilies and the Sparrows for their CD release in Greenville and it was such a party.
We would love to play with Junior Astronomers. They’re sound is just amazing, and the energy they have is contagious.
All Get Out always puts on a good show, and we’re pumped to hear their new record.
Austin’s – Valley Maker is always inspiring to hear and see them play.
