I literally have no idea how to start this. This was one of the craziest, most awesome nights of my life and I will try to explain it in the best way possible. This is a show that me and my band One Two Skidoo had been looking forward to since back in March when we met a wonderful man named Nathan K. He played with us at the House of Softcore at our first show and we found out that he is good friends with a band called Stepdad, who were (and still are) one of our favorite bands. He told us that he was going to tell them about us so we could set up a show with them, and we were like ‘whaaaaaaat’.
So we ended up booking them for Thursday, July 7 and we started practicing as soon as we booked it. See, our thing before was that we played acoustic Kanye West covers but we didn’t want to do that any more, we wanted to be even more original and play our own songs. So we wrote, and played, and wrote, and played, until the day finally came.
At 8:30pm on Thursday the show started, and there were already more people there than we expected to come. Local artist TOUCANS (Will Flourance’s project) opened the show, using amazing sounds and visuals to kick off the show. It was pretty fantastic. Then Nathan K played next and he ended up playing on the floor because the stage was a clutter of instruments. He got everyone to come in close and performed his interesting set full of loops and noises and his wonderful voice. It was a great set though I was kind of too focused on the fact that we were playing next to be completely drawn in to either of these sets.
Now, it would be very conceited of me to review my own set and be like “OH YEAH ONE TWO SKIDOO ARE THE BEST BAND EVER AND BETTER THAN ANYONE” so I’m just going to explain what it was like for me. This was our first full band, and oh my goodness it was crazy. All of us went harder than we have ever gone, I was going so hard that I couldn’t see from the sweat that was in my eyes. I can barely even remember what happened during the set and I kind of just did it and didn’t even think about any of it. The crowd were PHENOMENAL. They made the whole show. I didn’t want to describe my own show so I asked my friend Taylor Gibson to say something about us. He says that the show was “an untamed jamboree of sexual showmanship fueled by an urgent desire to give pop culture the most painful purple nurple it ever felt.” I guess that explains it. After I broke both a guitar and drum on stage, our set was over and Stepdad were up next. I was still pretty delirious after our set, but I got right to the front and got ready to go crazy.
Stepdad are going to be huge. I say it all the time but that’s because it’s true. Their set was so solid, so incredible, I can’t even believe they’re not huge already. Ultramark, Stepdad’s singer, has such an amazing stage presence, singing extremely catchy, amazing songs while rolling around on the ground and getting up and close with the crowd. They played a good amount of songs from their Ordinaire EP but I would have to say that the highlight were the reveal of quite a few new songs from their upcoming debut album Wildlife Pop. Magic Stones (a song that has recently been released online) was even better live, and it’s already an amazing song. The crowd were amazing as well. Everyone was going crazy and seemed to know all the words to all these great songs. Stepdad told us after the show that this was one of the best shows they have ever played which is absolutely amazing and proves that Columbia still does have a little bit of a music scene hidden somewhere.
Not only were Stepdad amazing live, they were also great guys. We spent the rest of the night with them and they were friendly and charming (except for Jeremy, he was the ultimate worst). I would highly recommend their music, go their website http://www.stepdad.us and get on it, before everyone else does.
