Sarah Hunter-Love to the Rescue
Sarah Hunter kind of came out of nowhere. From the late night singer songwriter circuit where so many great musicians vanish into and you barely ever hear anything about them, other than being impressed as you sit at Delaney’s having your third pint.
My friends kept telling me you have to hear Sarah Hunter, she’s amazing. It only took me 20 seconds to understand what they were all talking about. All of the loudmouth drunks in the bar shut up and look at the pretty girl on stage and everyone that gives half a shit about music is blown away by her voice, presence on piano and her straight forward personal lyrics.
With her first album It Will Happen To You, Sarah Hunter captures every emotion a girl could possibly go through in a broken relationship. The album is a journey that starts out begging to “Make It Right” again, goes through stages of desperation, anger and closes with an upbeat number declaring “Love to the Rescue.” The final track is a reflection on everything that broke down, but finally has the perspective to state “love will heal all of your wounds if you let it in.”
The album is packed with powerful lyrics. At times the songs seem wordy, it’s a lot to take in on first listen. It’s a story and you need every lyric, there isn’t a lot of time for refrain. Even at this albums most cutting parts, it’s so much more graceful than a Kelly Clarkson in your face “Since You’ve Been Gone” chorus. Sarah Hunter always stays a step above.
The album release show at The White Mule was simply one of the best shows I’ve been to. Surrounded by friends, fans and family and joined on stage by her sisters and band, she played straight through the album, culminating with the entire crowd singing her final track “Love to the Rescue.” It was a really special moment and the applause couldn’t have lasted long enough. It was one of those perfect moments at a show.
