Towards the end of his days with Sequoyah Prep School Johnnie Matthews opened up a couple of shows playing solo. He also penned the final track on Sequoyah’s last album Spells. That song was called “Suits” and it was resolute. The subject matter talked of the end, and looking at the album and career of Sequoyah as a whole seemed more that in pertained to the band. Since Matthews has left the band and focused on his solo work, it seems that song was a bit more personal.
While his voice might have been uncomfortable to Sequoyah fans beside Osborne’s on that album, it really comes to its own with “Only You.” His nerves have settled into honest lyrics. His ambient folk behind a hazy washed layer of reverb.
