If you’ve driven through the Vista you might have noticed some behind the scenes construction going on and an Urban Outfitters sign outside. On July 17 they’ll be cutting the ribbon to the new store and on July 20 the celebraish will begin.
The grand opening party gets started at 4 PM with free gift bag giveaways, food trucks, and live music from Tanlines (DJ set) and Washed Out (DJ Set).
Washed Out is set to release a new album August 13 titled Paracosm. The group, fronted by Ernest Greene, blew up on the music scene thanks in part to their 2011 album Within Without. Washed Out began making noise with the single “Feel It All Around” years before, propelling them to a record deal with indie record label giant Sub Pop. The song was later used as the theme of Portlandia, a satirical comedy on the lives of Portland hipster culture.
Washed Out has many SC ties, starting with front-man Ernest Greene’s studies at the University of South Carolina. At live shows, Greene is joined by Columbia, SC natives Cameron Gardner (Heist and the Accomplice) on drums and Chris Gardner (Those Lavender Whales, Fork and Spoon Records) on bass. Greene and Columbia native Chaz Bundick of Toro y Moi are both seen as two of the founders of the “chill wave” genre that swept the underground music nation only four years ago.
Hey Urban Outfitters, keep up the good work. This store could easily slide right in and become a big, much needed part of the music scene here. Maybe some in store concerts during the day before shows? 🙂
