Every once in a while, an album comes into the hands of WUSC that continues to receive just as many spins during the personal time of DJs as it receives on the air, even long after it has been phased out of rotation.
Released August 20, Typhoon’s White Lighter is still carrying buzz in the station. Varying from 11 to 14 members at a given time, this Portland-based group has been making music since 2005. While entertaining in the vein of other ‘chamber pop’, power groups like Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and Mumford & Sons, frontman Kyle Morton’s voice manages to envelop the listener in an Andrew Bird-esque warm and trusting hug despite all that is going on around him.
Typhoon epitomizes fine art in music in how they delicately layer their instruments (“Hunger And Thirst“, from album Hunger And Thirst) and pull the listener onto a roller-coaster of their own creation (“Artificial Light“, White Lighter). Also recommended, “The Lake“, from White Lighter.Â
Tune in to this Thursday’s Diagnosis on WUSC from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. for more from Typhoon.
