I’m going to cheat and go back in time a bit for this week’s WUSC Wednesday.
Just two weeks ago I featured artists from weekend two of Sasquatch! Music Festival, and one of those artists I ashamedly gave a passing glance. While I will not be featuring The Districts again on Thursday’s Diagnosis, I would still like to take a moment for their glory, especially as they are now gaining momentum on the WUSC charts.
The Districts are a four-piece out of Lititz, Penn. (–imagine my embarrassment in trying to pronounce this name on air) who have been making music together since high school. They released their self-titled EP Jan. 28 on Fat Possum Records in Oxford, Miss., where the Black Keys once called home.
After listening to this EP several times, I found myself feeling the same way each time–equally satisfied with the taste I got, but simultaneously wanting to hear more.
Taking elements of blues, folk-pop, and pure rock and roll, this EP simply comforts my soul. Vocalist Rob Grote has just the right touch of rasp, touched by his pleas and tenderness. Each track is just exactly right, which could only be understood by giving it a listen. The closing track “Stay Open” will leave you feeling especially content.
The Districts will be opening for White Denim Friday in Asheville, and opening on tour with Dr. Dog this summer.
Don’t forget to tune in to the Diagnosis Thursday 12 p.m.-2 p.m. on 90.5 FM in Columbia or at wusc.sc.edu.
