In 2012 Paste Magazine listed Milton Hall as the #3 artist to know in South Carolina. It was a kind and most likely unexpected nod to the underground artist who played hook laden lofi pop. This is Paste Magazine after-all. The ranking was however deserved. Numb World was an adventure of a listen where unintelligible backwards vocals in one song turned to an sadly endearing pop song in the next. That album was an experience in home recording and fun tricks.
Since the release of Numb World Hall’s been quiet until now. With a new album due out this month he’s released the first track along with an album teaser. For Coat from Japan Hall put together a band that includes Stan Gardner (Confederate Fagg, Buck Stanley, Jebel) and John Furr on guitar. They went into Furr’s home studio for what they thought would be a 3 song project, but soon expanded to the full album. Hall had planned to record three full band songs and mix them with home recordings, but the process with Furr and Gardner was easy enough that they recorded the full album together. Furr took an invested interest in the project by acting much like a producer in addition to playing bass and guitar.
“Long Hangover” is a straight pounding guitar driven indie rocker setting the tone for the new album. It’s not a step forward from Numb World, more like a cohesive sidekick when we’ll look back on the two.
