Mike Collins Jr. was born in South Carolina, but these days he spends more time on the road than he does in his current hometown of New Orleans. He tours at his own pace, busking from city to city with his banjo and suitcase/bass drum in tow. The first single from Collins’ upcoming album Tryin to Stay Ahead is fully reflective of his journey. The title alone says it all. “Homesick Carolina Blues” speaks to the feeling of loneliness on the road and the immediacy to which he misses home and his distant lover.
This song and the album stay true to Mike Collins Jr.’s music. Recorded live in a living room in South Carolina what you hear is what you get, whether he’s playing on a street corner in Europe or for his début album. Strumming his banjo with a driving rhythm, Collins sings truths as he tells his life stories through his songs.
The new album comes out December 30, 2014 on Fork and Spoon Records and will be accompanied by a release shows in Columbia and Charleston.
