Arts and Draughts Feb 6 at Columbia Museum of Art
Thinking back on Arts and Draughts I can’t remember a time when the featured brewery was from a local brewer. This time around the featured beer is Broad River Red Ale from River Rat Brewery, located just miles down the road in the shadow of Williams-Brice Stadium. The museum’s website describes the brew as
A beer to be enjoyed by all. English malts and Santanum hops provide full flavor to this medium bodied red ale. A mild hop character makes this our beer of choice on a hot sunny day.
I don’t imagine February 6 being a hot sunny day, but the Broad River Red Ale does sound delicious.
The last Arts and Draughts featured a stacked lineup of local bands, one of those lineups that will get better as we look at it in hindsight. This time around they’ve opted for two North Carolina bands and Zach Joseph from Nashville. Sinners and Saints and Amigo are no strangers to Columbia. The two Americana tinged bands pull from the roots of country and rock n roll, and make the hour and fifteen minute drive from Charlotte several times a year. Sinners and Saints are an upbeat folk duo who blend a variety of instruments from banjo and guitar, to upright bass with percussion mixed in. They stay busy on stage to say the least.
Amigo kick it up a notch in volume from Sinners and Saints, with frontman Slade Baird’s guitar often guiding the show. The trio mixes it up live as they do on their album Might Could, moving from driving alt country to honky-tonk and doo-wop. They’ll be some sticky floors in the museum after these two play.
In addition to the music there will be docent-led tours, a puppet show by Lyon Hill, live chess in the galleries — with the chance to join a game yourself, screenings of Indie Grits Film Festival short, scavenger hunt through the galleries, a Love-ly photo booth, creator space to make artful valentines, and more.
