How cool would it be to have “The Papa Jazz Sessions” where we brought in bands to play a song or two acoustic and give the artists the opportunity to talk about some of their favorite and most influential records? Could be awesome, and hopefully we can make that happen. With this new Stagbriar song it just worked out that we got to film in Papa Jazz Record Shoppe in Columbia, SC.
As the deadline for Tiny Desk Concert entries approached, I helped Stagbriar film their entry which can be seen here. That was one of two new songs we filmed that night, the other titled “Humble Or Hungry” can be heard here.
Over the last six months things have slowed down for Stagbriar due to the fact that they’re working on a new album, the follow-up to their excellent début Quasi-hymns, Murder-Ballads, and Tales of How the Hero Died, and due to the success of ET Anderson and co-frontman Alex McCollum’s high-profile role as guitarist in that group. The two new acoustic songs are proof that Stagbriar’s sophomore album won’t disappoint. The core of the band is the McCollum siblings whose biggest strengths lie in their ability to play off each other with ease, two voices that somehow weave into one, and guitar parts that do the same. The two new songs touch deep and personal too, growing words watered by life experiences from a past made of rich soil.
The album looks to turn out much different from the last. Since the last album, Stagbriar has much evolved as a band with the addition of Jared Pyritz (Magnetic Flowers) intense guitar playing, Steve Sancho (every other band in Columbia) on drums, and Brett Kent on bass.
