What started in 2014 at King Dusko in Charleston as Hearts & Plugs annual showcase has grown into a full blown annual event with an expanded lineup and multiple stages at The Royal American in its fourth year. Now in its third location, The Royal American has taken the Summer Shindig under its wing, hosting the event with Murias Entertainment. The event runs from 4 PM – 11 PM this year with tickets going for just $25. If you’re not too toasty from an afternoon in the sun, there’s an after party inside that goes from 11-1:30 for an additional $10.
This year 11 acts will grace two outdoor stages, while the inside of Royal American will host the afterparty featuring your local scooter riding, mullet wearing, opinionated and hilarious Crab Claw along with DJ Party Dad & Friends. The Royal American and Home Team BBQ will be slinging food all day.
Headlined by Georgia pysch country rockers Futurebirds and Charleston hip-hop artist Matt Monday, the Summer Shindig took a huge step forward with the addition of these two, especially Matt Monday, one of the areas most prominent artists. In addition to S.W.i.M., Monday was recognized in 2013 as “Charleston’s 50 Most Progressive” by Charlie Magazine, and is pretty much the annual pick for best hip hop artist via Charleston City Paper. Hidden in the middle of the lineup is North Carolina pysch rock outfit Zack Mexico, who play a string of dates with Future Islands on their album release tour leading up to this show. Returning from years past are ET Anderson, Grace Joyner, and Johnny Delaware, this year with his full band The Artisinals featuring members of Brave Baby. Delaware played solo and with Susto in past years.
Wear sunscreen, get your tickets early, pray for good weather, pace your Royal American punches, and show you’re in the know with your flamingo wear. It’s gonna be a blast.
