Featuring members of several well-regarded local bands, Real Work released their first single and video for “Numb Mind” Friday, with an EP and a string of shows to follow in May. Fronted by Kenny McWilliams, who is a former member of Baumer (2003-2008), McWilliams now works behind the mixing board recording and producing at his studio Archer Avenue Studio. This is his first time fronting a band, and he’s joined by an amazing cast of musicians. What McWilliams imagined to be a duo with former Baumer bass player Chad Rochester turned into much more with the additions of guitarist Christian Tyler of Rejectioneers, Brewer Eberly, and former NEEDTOBREATHE drummer Joe Stillwell behind the kit.
Indie Rock at heart, Real Work leans towards big hooks, and carefully curated song structures. It helps that each member has deep roots in music and song composition, with this project they stay focused on personal lyrics about life, family, and the balance of art in that structure.
In their newest video, the band’s live show is featured, though they’ve yet to perform live. It works to introduce the band, each one who brings an energy to the stage. The live shots filmed at Music Farm Columbia are interspersed with breathtaking, wondrous types of shots that give a feeling of both space and intimacy.
