Last year we theorized on who Shovels and Rope would pull in to follow-up a wildly popular first year festival that seemed to go off with no issues. Jason Isbell’s name came up, Jeff Tweedy’s did not. Band of Horses name came up, but M. Wards did not. Again this year, the big name acts are there making High Water not only one of the best Americana/roots based festivals in the South, but one of the best in the country. Overall it has that Charleston feel, with the rivers and setting sun at your back in the evenings, tons of great beer and amazing food, and a mix of local talent along with some of the best songwriters in the country. With Isbell and Tweedy on board especially, there’s just no doubt about it.
And how about that local talent. Shovels and Rope and company have a plethora to choose from, including Band of Horses who’ve become regular faces around town and have been recording music there at Rialto Row as well. They’ll headline the festival Sunday night, with Shovels and Rope again performing at the prime golden hour, followed by rising local heroes Susto. What a time to live in Charleston and be a part of that music scene. It really is in an amazing place when you have this festival book ended with The High Divers starting off the day and then three of the city’s biggest bands headlining the night.
You have the feature acts, you have the local acts, but that’s not the only places the festival excels. Just look at the rising talent the festival offers up during the day. Acts that a lot of the crowd will glaze over as they look at the lineup, are ones that look to benefit the most from gaining fans day of. Nicole Atkins, Weaves, and Tank and the Bangas to name a few are some superb upcoming talent, and St Paul & The Broken Bones is a great afternoon pick me up on Saturday.
For more info on what you can and can’t bring in check the High Water website. To check out each act listen to our Spotify playlist!
