On Friday, Michael Flynn revived the alias Slow Runner, released a new single titled “Secret Journal”, unveiled a sleek new website, and hinted that there would be more announcements coming soon.

In late 1999, at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Michael Flynn met Josh Kaler, a Minnesota native. Josh was the president of a songwriters workshop that Michael attended where he’d bring in new songs each week, fine tuning a craft and a dream that they’d end up spending the coming years focusing on. They ended up writing and recording “No Disassemble” and soon after got signed to SonyBMG. That’s where Slow Runner was born.
On September 27, 2013, the group bid farewell to the Slow Runner name and era, and went their separate ways, each still focused on music. The truth is, nothing really changed.
Michael went on to record three full length albums, an EP, and several singles. He still collaborated with Josh and all of his typical collaborators. He settled into the foothills of the Appalachians, and shared the experience with us.
Here’s where geopolitics gets involved. In February of 2016 D. Trump hired Michael Flynn as his national security advisor. The rest is history and OUR Michael Flynn became unsearchable on the web. It took a little time, but all signs led to reviving the Slow Runner name.
The decision to resurrect Slow Runner aligns with a simpler time in Michael’s creative journey. The release of the new single “Secret Journal” featuring both Flynn and Kaler marks the beginning of this new phase. Michael’s hope is that the alias Slow Runner will help their music be the focus without being overshadowed by external factors. After all, no one named Slow Runner has any shot to succeed in the political realm.
While Josh won’t be a full-time contributor, his involvement in upcoming Slow Runner projects ensures a connection to its origins. This move allows Michael to navigate the challenges of the modern digital landscape while staying true to his musical essence.
What does the next chapter include? I’d predict a steady flow of music. Michael wrote the new single “Secret Journal” leading up to a gig at a Western NC songwriters event.
