David here. It was a big week for SceneSC. From a feature in our local paper to being included in stories from Consequence of Sound, NME, Stereogum, and even an international rock station from Brazil, here’s a recap and what’s happening this week.
- I was in attendance to see R.E.M. reunite onstage for the first time since their Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007 and the photo I snagged became part of the story. I rarely had my phone out as Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy ripped through R.E.M.’s first two releases and more, but snagged a few flicks throughout the night. No one expected Michael Stipe to come out, but other founding members Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry had made appearances on songs earlier in the night.
Luckily, I got a photo and video of the surprise guest appearance that found its way into all types of music blogs. I’m thrilled to be part of the documentation of the history of my favorite band and for it to be SceneSC’s most viral X.
True crime meets SC music
- On Sunday morning we were watching a new true crime documentary on HBO called “They Called Him Mostly Harmless” and recognized local musician Bombadier. He played a large role in the documentary and even performed his song “I’ve Been Thinking” dedicated to his experience.
National Anthem
Indigo Sounds alum, Admiral Radio, performed the “The Star-Spangled Banner” for nearly 16,000 people last Saturday at Colonial Life Arena before the Gamecocks men’s basketball game. They crushed it. Tune back into our episodewith the local duo.
It’s me in the news
“The more informed the people are locally, the healthier the music scene is going to be,” Stringer said. It’s like an ecosystem.
