In the last season of the popular HBO series Eastbound and Down, the once great flamethrower Kenny Powers makes a stop in Myrtle Beach to hone his skills in the minor leagues with his eyes set on the bigs. With no way to recreate the sights and sounds of the Grand Strand in a Hollywood Studio, HBO crew took to the streets of Myrtle Beach including many local residents and attractions in the filming of the hit comedy series.
The mastermind behind it all, Drake Cartrette, is a big fan of popular culture and pop culture art himself. In metropolitan areas it’s common to see pop art shows, similar to what Cartrette is putting together at Freshed Brewed Coffee House, but in Myrtle Beach this seems a little out-of-place. Just like Kenny Powers plays the roll of the underdog in Eastbound and Down, Cartrette is the underdog in a city that is more known for art containing rebel flags and Brazilian bikinis, than it is for art featuring not only some of South Carolina’s finest artists, but artist recognized on a regional, national, and even international level.
Eastbound Art will feature poster art by international, national, regional, and local artists: Matt Needle, Bill Pyle, Poster Hound Family Workshop, George Hage, Dan Tanamo, Jonathan Ady, Drake Cartrette, and Lisa Tyree. Limited edition screen printed and digital poster prints will be available for viewing as well as purchase during Eastbound Art.
The show takes place on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 7pm to 9pm at Fresh Brewed Coffee House, at 933 Broadway Street in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Admission to Eastbound Art is free.Â
