Bazan was on it at Cat’s Cradle in Carborro Sunday, November 18. The crowd was not. If you are familiar with David Bazan live shows, it’s a regular part of his performance to take questions between songs. It gives him time to not only interact with the crowd, but to shed light on his sometimes cryptic religious messages and a little more depth into the concepts behind some of his records. At this show there was only one or two decent questions, and with that Bazan gave a great answer. Since this was the Control Tour, he explained the loose concept behind that album. He wanted to write a political album, but political albums often come out off-putting. The political climate pre 9-11-2001 wasn’t as heavy as post 9-11, and with this album he tried to capture the weight of the atmosphere.
So you think you’d have more serious questions than “What do you think of Dylan?” or “What is your favorite color?”. This is frustrating, but I guess I can’t complain too much. I’m guilty of not yelling the question I had prepared. Even with some silly questions, he obliged by talking about Fugazi and some of his favorite concerts.
The concert kicked off with the first five songs off Control, before splitting off into an assorted array of past material. This included songs from all of his projects including Headphones and newer solo material.
