Arts and Draughts, an event that combines all of our favorite things (good music, good food, good beer, good people, The Columbia Museum of Art, Scavenger Hunts), is back February 1 with Asthmatic Kitty Recording Artist Helado Negro to headline.
The quarterly party at the Columbia Museum of Art is fueled this time around by the craft brews of Goose Island Brewery, with the feature beer being their 312 Urban Wheat. Their seasonal Mild Winter and IPA will also be available.
The music will kick off at 7 with Tom Hall and the Plowboys performing their new short film “Field Trial.” The follow-up to their previous projects, “The Sharecroppers Daughter” and “The Visions of Black Elk.” The Plowboys will be followed by Los Perdidos, who unfortunately had to cancel their performance at the November 2012 Arts and Draughts. Los Perdidos is an instrumental rock combo that’s been around Columbia since 1995. Playing main support to Helado Negro is Fork and Spoon Recording artist Those Lavender Whales. Their whimsical album Tomahawk of Praise was rated among the top albums of 2012 by Free Times, Jasper Magazine, and of course SceneSC.
Headlining will be Asthmatic Kitty recording artist Helado Negro. With the single “Dance Ghost” off their upcoming album Invisible Life, Helado Negro’s Robert Lange has moved from folk — to music with more of an electric touch . The Asthmatic Kitty label is most widely known as being the home to artists such as Sufjan Stevens, along with a host of talented artists including Denison Witmer, and Julianna Barwick.
Special to this Arts and Draughts is a series of short plays called Ugly Art. Presented by Pocket Productions in collaboration with Trustus Theater, the Lab Theater at USC and Scriptwriters of SC, Ugly Art is a series of short plays, all which take place at an art opening. Written by Terry Roueche, the 10 minute plays will be performed spontaneously throughout the night.
Following up the wildly successful Rothko exhibit will be Impressionism: from Monet to Matisse, which opens January 25. With this Arts and Draughts you’ll get to experience this exhibit for only the price of admission. As usual, if you join up and become a member of the Columbia Museum of Art at the event, you will get in free.
The food will only fight to keep you sober, but there are going to delicious options available. As usual Bone-In Artisan BBQ will have their truck outside, along with the Fair Food Truck. Earth Fare will also be there with free samples of signature items.
The week before the event we’ll be giving out a handful of tickets, so keep your eye on our Facebook and Twitter.
