Conundrum Music Hall Columbia SC on Jan 17th with Let’s Go, Coyote!/People Person
It wasn’t long ago that I had the pleasant surprise of walking into a North Elementary set at The Courtroom in Rock Hill, SC. North Elementary falls somewhere along the lines of 90’s indie pop bands like Pavement and Superchunk, but their frontman John Harrison finds his experimental comfort zone with his solo project Jphono1. Harrison’s low hushed voice mixes with hazy electronics, and array of acoustic and electric instruments, forming laid back psychedelic instrumentals and folkier ballads. One thing Jphono1 doesn’t do is overstay his welcome with his experimentation. On his latest release Know Your Clouds, more traditional song structures like “Auto Sleeper” and “The Miner Kids” are surrounded with mesmerizing moments like “Step Into the Hotpocket.”
Opening the show will be People Person and Let’s Go, Coyote!. People Person is led by Can’t Kid’s drummer Jessica Oliver, as she blows off steam with tongue in cheek lyrics. Let’s Go, Coyote! venue performances are somewhat rare. The solo project of Those Lavender Whales guitarist Patrick Wall features open tunings, and Owenesque wintery lyrics and guitar lines.
