It’s fitting that Helado Negro means “black ice cream”; it’s not whimsy, necessarily, but there is a sort of playfulness in the music that does not negate its warm, inviting quality. Roberto Lange, the man behind Helado Negro’s lush, soundscape-meetelectro-pop sound, draws on a wealth of influences and inspirations: DJ and house music, found sound, his own upbringing in South Florida.
He has been active in one way or another since the early 2000s, in different bands and collaborations. After moving to New York from Savannah in 2006, he began his own work as Helado Negro, beginning with the release of Awe Owe on Asthmatic Kitty Records in 2009. Since then, his output has been steady, releasing Canta Lechuza in 2011, Island Universe Story One in 2012, and Island Universe Story Two and Invisible Life in 2013. Along with these records, last year he released a collaborative effort with Julianna Barwick as OMBRE (Believe You Me), combining their respective strengths into something new and refreshing.
If you missed this performer at the Columbia Museum of Art last time he was in town, this is definitely not a show to be missed.
