The age-old saying that opposites attract comes to mind when you hear Norah Jones pairing with Billie Joe Armstrong to record a tribute album to The Everly Brothers. The album, aptly titled Foreverly isn’t just a rundown of The Everly Brothers hits focusing mostly on the 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The album comes after the 2013 passing of Phil Everly.
It’s shocking at first to hear Armstrong out of his pop-punk style, singing smoothly with the dark and smooth voice of Jones. But it works well and the album comes off both charming and well done. More than anything it shows the power of the Everly Brothers influence on all types of modern popular music. Armstrong and Jones put on a clinic on the album when it comes to close harmony, showing off the same tight-knit singing as The Everly Brothers themselves. Really, what else would you expect? The two have won a combined 14 GRAMMYs between them.
