The 80s are calling and they want their music back. Too bad, because Australian electronic crew Cut Copy is keeping the 80s alive with synth-heavy new wave meets house music that arrives somewhere between Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, and Talking Heads mashed up with a toned down Deadmau5. The lead vocals are so 80s it’s almost corny, making everything that much more lighthearted, while the synthesizer brings you back to pre-dub-step era days with a higher-pitched, electro-pop noise. It’s the kind of music for a summer throwback night where you want to do a little dancing but it doesn’t matter if you look like a spastic robot tripping out on robo-juice. Those moves would have blended in perfectly at the Music Farm on Wed. night.
Cut Copy technoed out, got a little trippy, and traveled back in time or possibly into the future to a different musical dimension during their tour stop in Charleston, all the while conveying their “free your mind” message both in the backdrop and through their hypnotic sound. Their live rendition was definitely a much more elevated and engaging experience than their digital tracks, offering an obviously richer and heavier sound but also a better conveyance of what their music represents.
At one point, the background became a swirling black and white spiral sucking everyone into the synthesized void. The light show kept things dancey with alternating bursts of rainbow colored lights, blacklight haunted house flashes, and blasts of bright beams with the beat. It all created this effect that drew you deeper into the music and well, freed your mind.
Cut copy & paste Cut Copy’s name into Spotify radio for a techno-tweaked blast from the past. Then go watch The Breakfast Club & Pretty in Pink & every other Molly Ringwald movie you own on VHS.
