Cancellieri spends most of his time on the road, playing all types of different venues as he journeys across the states. He’s usually playing through his own PA system, and most of the gigs include a mix of originals and covers. That makes Closet Songs: A Collection of Demos and Covers a fitting companion record to the Welcome to Mount Pleasant album released earlier this year.
That album is a beautifully delicate mix of songs, carefully constructed in the recording process with Stagbriar’s Alex McCollum in his home studio. The songs and stories hold the character with which they were written. On Closet Songs, singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Hutchens takes on other peoples songs that he’s made his own by performing some night after night. Covers of songs from everyone from The Avett Brothers, Coldplay, Justin Townes Earle, Damien Rice, Jack Johnson, and Langhorne Slim come off honest and true as Hutchens puts his on interpretation on each tune. Pair that with demos of his own and you’ve got a solid companion of an album. Truth is, his material isn’t far off from his contemporary music favorites.
