Last week American Gun had the opportunity to rock out with Southern Rock legends Drivin n Cryin at the Handlebar in Greenville, but Kevn must have gotten too much of the wild bunch because he dropped off the show tomorrow. Over the last couple of months the alt country outfit from Columbia have been recording their new album at South Carolina’s premier recording studio The Jam Room. We caught up with Todd Mathis (Guitar/Vocals) and asked him a couple of questions about the new album.
How would you describe the new American Gun album?
We have Donald’s most punk song in “The Underground” and my most country in “13 Women.” There’s a song about Jesus and a song about the devil and one that focuses on how some of life’s most pivotal decisions can take place at a Mexican restaurant. There is of course the usual suspects for an “alt-country” album in love and loss and the lyrical theme probably tends to go towards, “Things are gonna be ok,” while the music overall is upbeat. I’d guess about 10-12 cases of Busch Light were consumed while recording the album and God knows what all Donald consumed when writing his songs…I was on a wine kick.
Have you finished recording the album? When is the release date?
The album should be mixed/mastered by the end of August. The recording is done unless we find something that needs adding while mixing. As for when it will be released…there’s no telling…lots of things are up in the air on that.
What is difference between the new album and The Means and The Machine?
A big difference is the addition of Noel on guitar. His style is definitely different from Jeff’s. I’m thinking the drums/guitars on this album will be a bit bigger than the last as well. A lot of the last record had main piano parts but this record is more guitar driven with the keys added as an afterthought. It would have been an entirely different record had Tim (keyboardist who is working in Iraq) been here, but I’m happy with the recordings. We had Zack from American Aquarium put down a few keyboard tracks for us that really fill things out. There’s also a kick ass bass solo and some mean fiddle and banjo playing on this album. The last record didn’t have any of that.
