About every music news site out there has been covering the story about The Get Up Kids apologizing for being an influence on the “neon” bands of today. So I did a little research and none of the pop bands of today even list The Get Up Kids as an influence. I looked at 10 of their myspaces and none list them. If I am wrong you can correct me. What does 3oh3 or Millionaires even have to do with punk, indie or rock music? Are you apologizing for the natural flow of music from grunge to glam? This is kind of like saying Mudhoney influenced The Backstreet Boys.
“Honestly, I don’t often think about the state of ‘emo’. The punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now. We played the Bamboozle fests this year and we felt really out of place. I could name maybe three bands we played with. It was just a sea of neon shirts to us. If this is the world we helped create, then I apologise…If a band gets huge and they say we inspired them, great. The problem is most of them aren’t very good. What does that say about us? I don’t know. Maybe we sucked. We at least can play our instruments.”
Check this out, Stella By Starlight samples “God Only Knows” in their song, so they are influenced by The Beach Boys. God Only Knows is one of the best songs ever written. Brian Wilson I demand an apology for what you have influenced!
The truth is The Get Up Kids interview got blown out of proportion, but it’s fun to talk about! Put the emphasis on the “if this is the world we help create, then I apologize…”
