Elf Power Live at Horizon Records 4:30
Elf Power at The Spinning Jenny with Secret Guest and Daddy’s Beemer
I dare call The Spinning Jenny Greer’s first legitimate music venue. Located halfway between Spartanburg and Greenville on the edge of downtown Greer, The Spinning Jenny and the strong shows they’ve booked are unlikely. The last time I was in that venue before attending Future Chord Fest last year, the walls were lined with posters of country music stars from Alan Jackson to Garth Brooks. I don’t recall if there was a poster of home town hero Aaron Tippin on the wall, but I’d like to imagine there was.
These days the space has taken on new life, like much of downtown Greer has. Over the past year they’ve hosted some of South Carolina’s top local acts like Susto, The Restoration, and The High Divers along with regional powers Drivin n’ Cryin, Jill Andrews, Futurebirds, Bombadil, Â and Mipso. Now, add to that list one of Athen’s finest, Elf Power.
On their new album Twitching in Time, Elf Power sound as creative as ever. Now 23 years into their career, the four years leading up to this album was the longest they’ve gone between albums since their formation. The time off seemed to have worked as Twitching in Time both touches on classic Elf Power sounds and explores new territory. From lo-fi melodic ballads, to pysched out fuzzy guitars, Andrew Rieger and collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Laura Carter continue to mix their signature sounds with melodic feel. Now they’re taking it on the road and away from the 100 plus acre Orange Twin Conservation Community that’s also their record label (along with many other great artists). The Elephant 6 collective band last toured with label mates Neutral Milk Hotel, a reunion of sorts from their first national tour in 1998.
Joining the bill are Charleston band Secret Guest and Upstate band Daddy’s Beemer.
