What’s the first album you remember loving as a kid?
Kevin– Queen-News of the World, the artwork was awesome and I really liked the song “Get Down, Make Love.”
Gina–Blondie, Parallel Lines. My neighbor Diane (a few years older) and I would listen to this record at her house. I remember us giggling at the line “soon turned out to be a pain in the ass.”
What was the first album you bought with your own money?
Kevin–The Beatles. “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” was always a go to song.
Gina–Toni Basil “Mickey” was the first single I bought, the first 45 to hit my kiddie turntable that was not a record book (like the Peter Pan or Disney ones). I remember picking up a cheerleading uniform at a garage sale for like 50 cents and practicing the moves from the video.
First LP I remember buying was The Police Synchronicity. I paid in quarters at the mall, the reward for counting, rolling, and reporting the correct total from this Greek-style urn where my dad kept his change. Also purchased on that trip: stickers and outliner pens.
What was the first local band that caught your ear?
Kevin–Confederate Fagg. I REALLY want to play a show with them.
Gina–I’m not originally from Columbia, but the first band I remember seeing here was the most excellent Los Perdidos.
What’s the most recent album you bought or have been listening to lately?
Kevin–Witchthroat Serpent, Sang Dragon. They have an awesome song called “Lady Sally” that feels like they are playing the bass under the floor.
Gina–The new Zeke record (Hellbender), which I ordered yesterday.
Where did the idea for cat themes come from?
Kevin–We really like cats and we like a lot of old school punk, rock n roll, anything really. The Stooges, Motörhead, The Damned, Chuck Berry, etc. We also had an idea like Personal and the Pizza does, they sing about pizza. Turbo Gatto sings about cats.
Gina–The Ramones, lobotomy rock. Shonen Knife write songs about cats, broccoli, mushrooms, banana chips, and what have you, but they really just tear it up. When we describe cat rock, we often get a giggle or two. Like, seriously,”cat music?” But we love it, put all we’ve got into it, and have a blast. We really appreciate when people tell us “that’s nothing like what I expected. But in a good way!”
