Valley Maker
Valley Maker is the project of South Carolina native Austin Crane. Once a solo songwriting vehicle, it has expanded to include other touring bandmates such as Charleston favorites Amber Joyner and Nic Jenkins. Self-reflection, intimate relationships, and the work of maintaining friendships over time and space all figure into Crane’s lyrics, and the music brings together the rhythmic persistence of Kurt Vile with the brooding sonics of Magnolia Electric Company.

Marcus King Band
It’s no secret that the last few years have seen a resurgence in the mainstream popularity of roots music. Lucky for us, or we might be missing out on hearing about some great acts even in our own backyard. Marcus King Band is at its core a blues band, but like other recent acts, he brings his own ingredients to the music and the delivery. His vocals are delivered with a laid-back gruffness, like Chris Stapleton hanging out on the front porch. If you’re a fan of the new forebears of the alt-country scene, like Stapleton, this is one to check out.

Susto
Justin Osborne and SUSTO return to SXSW right on the heels of their LP, Ever Since I Lost My Mind, newly released on Rounder Records. For fans of Susto, Osborne’s lyrics on the new record explore familiar territory, examining issues of youthful transience and lighthearted uncertainty in the face of dogmatism.

Daddy’s Beemer
There are many cases where a band’s name conveys the mood, style or lyrical content within the songs. That’s not necessarily the case with Daddy’s Beemer, which is not a knock on either the name or the music. But a first read of the name might lead an unfamiliar listener to expect light-hearted, humorous pop-rock. What this band offers, however, are solid, dynamic tunes, occasionally reminiscent of Phoenix and The Killers. Brady Sklar’s emotive, gymnastic vocals are at the forefront, one moment a nearly whispered falsetto, the next belting out the chorus.

The Artisanals
If there existed an award for “most spot-on replication of an actual 80’s rock band,” The Artisanals would win. They have all the details down: the rhythms, the effects, the production; even singer Johnny Delaware’s vocal delivery has you convinced you’re listening to Tom Petty and Don Henley’s love child. The lyrics, as well, are classic rock n’ roll, snapshots from along the great American highway, with all its love, heartbreak, and triumph. These fellas are bringing it all back home, and I’m here for it.
