We’re less than two weeks away from Hopscotch, a Raleigh based music festival that’s brought some of the best up-and-coming, local, regional, and national indie acts to North Carolina over the past decade+.
This year, there are two South Carolina bands performing at the festival. We caught up with Dylan Dickerson, frontman for Dear Blanca and half of the record label collective and podcast Comfort Monk.
Here are Dylan’s top five bands he’s looking forward to seeing and why at Hopscotch 2023.
- Pavement — In recent months I’ve really taken a deep dive into their catalog and I love it. Thanks to Brett Nash for guiding me on my Pavement / Silver Jews journey. Hoping for a tennis doubles match against Bob & Stephen.
- Dinosaur Jr. — All of us in Dear Blanca are big Dino Jr. fans. I think the last time I saw them live was when I was in high school and Mike Watt opened.
- The Sloppy Boys — Haven’t seen these guys since our last show together in Vancouver last September. We had a Midwest tour planned for this year that didn’t pan out so this will be an awesome excuse to hang with those guys again. Hoping they play some of the songs from their new album.
- Quasi : Great band. The keyboard player has such a distinct sound and the drummer is amazing. They were also Elliott Smith’s backing band around the ‘XO’ era which is also pretty special.
- Denzel Curry : Started listening to him once I saw his name on the Hopscotch lineup. Really enjoy what I’ve heard and think he will put on a wild show.
Honorable mention :
- Cut Worms : This guy writes some great songs and they sound very convincingly not of our time.
