David here — last year I launched the Indigo Sounds podcast and this year I launched its companion newsletter. You’re reading it. Now, I need to do a better job about tying those two together.
Good news, several Indigo Sounds podcasts are in the works and two of them will feature acoustic live performance song premieres. I’m looking forward to hosting EZ Shakes, Lang Owen, and Brett Nash + Dylan Dickerson and their band SHOWS over the next three weeks.
Here’s what’s happening in South Carolina music news.
- New Brookland Tavern is expanding to the Sylvan & DuBose Jewelers space next door to its current venue. The new space will hold 150 to 200 people and serve as a space for bands who can’t quite fill the upstairs room. This is similar to what Cat’s Cradle does with the backroom. David Bluetile shared his support as the local shows they love to host are a heavy weight on the staff.
- Former SceneSC contributor and current Post and Courier features editor Kayln Oyer rounded up 15 concerts coming to Charleston in April.
- “Writing songs can be a lot like breakfast. Some days you have it, some days you don’t.” — That’s what Nathan Merli (Chemical Therapy, formerly known as Heyrocco) told Extra Chill in a recent interview. Read more and check out the new song from the LA via Charleston band.
- Upstate indie rock artist Zane Vickery dropped his new song “Hydrangea” just in time for the flowers to bloom. The new song is a follow up to his 2022 single “Is there Room Enough For Me” and is leading towards a follow up album to the 2021 album Breezewood.
- What bands would you like to see at the Jam Room Music Festival in 2024? Take this quick and easy survey to give us some ideas.
- Charleston-based artist Lost Coop dropped a new video for their song Glass Fort and you can watch it here.
- SC artists PrivateFuneral dropped their new album “Burial Tapes”, a 14 track quick hitting mix of grunge and rap. Dig in.

I spent a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon hanging out with Ben Kerley in the Carolina Guitar Company workshop and HQ in Columbia. It had me thinking, of all of the shows we’d hosted with David Bazan, Andy Shauf, Gasoline Heart, Kitten (with members of Fidlar), Frontier Ruckus, and more I can’t think of. Maybe you’ve heard of them, maybe you haven’t, but those were some special shows.
