Rock Hill has set their summer concert series with one band a month and a price tag to go along with it.
Kicking off the festival this Saturday May 1st is SC legend Edwin McCain. He will be followed up in June by Sister Hazel, July with Cravin Melon and August with The Little River Band.
The summer concert series has hopes of drawing in a younger crowd, mainly from Winthrop, but with high ticket prices ($28/$38 Reserved Seating for Edwin McCain) and acts 15 years from their prime, I’m not sure how that will do.
So let me weigh in with some free advice. Instead of paying $15-20,000 for these acts once a month, bring in some current acts for a lot less once a week. Maybe every Thursday night…and have it be free. The amphitheater is great venue, get people of all ages there as much as you can. These downtown events have been successful in the past, they just need to be consistent and bring in talented bands. And beer, have good affordable beer. Just model yourself after Greenville. They do it right. Good bands that draw people and are much more affordable exist, and often they are right in your back yard.
Other notable things from the article. They listed these bands prices! Did Cravin’ Melon get paid in the $20,000 range in their prime at Center City Fest??
Because the bands have had commercial success, their shows come with price tags. McCain, Sister Hazel and the Little River Band charged in the low $20,000s, Randall said, while Cravin’ Melon signed for slightly less.
At one point, Randall thought she was close to landing the Avett Brothers, a North Carolina trio with a loyal following and new album produced by music legend Rick Rubin. But the band’s price soared to above $100,000 after a radio hit.
This intimate concert setting under the stars is a unique way to hear music of all kinds. Watch your favorite artists live as they rock the stage. This outdoor performance venue doesn’t have a bad seat!
