All Get Out’s Mel Washington has released two new singles this week, “Sleep” and “Alive.” Both are available now through melwashington.bandcamp.com. He’s written a few words about this release:
I made a commitment to myself, friends, and fans that I wanted to release as much material as I possibly could this year. It was not as a ‘help-get-Mel-famous’ or ‘get-Mel-rich-quick’ scheme. It was a challange to myself, to continue to be creative, productive, and positive. It’s also an exercise of my faith in the fact that there are some people that for some reason have supported me. And the hope that maybe one thing that I have to say in my songs means something to somebody.
I honestly didn’t like this song after I wrote it. It seemed a bit cheesy and probably is. But, it’s probably one of the most straight forward, honest songs I’ve written. And honesty is where I want to be as a songwriter.
I remember David Bazan saying in Matt Malpass’s living room a few months ago, “It would be nice if there were some organic voices in the future that people had access to that you didn’t have to be a weirdo to appreciate.”
This song is far from the bullseye, but an honest, humble attempt. There are many people out there that are much more on point and I can’t wait to hear what they’re creating as well.
