In 2003 during the “2nd” Iraq war lead singer of American Gun Todd Mathis wrote a song called “The Other Nine.”  The song focused on a news story he had seen about a local guy that had been killed in a helicopter crash or bombing. While there were 10 people that died in this incident, the news story only focused on the one man. Mathis imagined “The Other Nine” men were receiving similar news stories in their own towns. Mathis recorded a demo of this song and submitted it to Neil Young’s Living With War website, where it was featured on the site.
Over the past seven years, Mathis has added to his collection of war songs and released them on iTunes. Each song on the album confronts different aspects of war, all of which came to him either through reading about WWII, the Civil War, stories from the news and memories from his youth.
