House show’s in this town run in the family tree. Friday night at my house (House of Softcore) will feature Ben Walker, Amy Godwin and Austin Crane playing music from his Valley Maker release. Saturday across town my cousin Bentz will be hosting two Scene SC favorites Dylan Sneed and Hannah Miller at the Alien Carnival house.
Valley Maker- For a lot of people Austin Crane has disappeared. Why did he stop playing shows? Where did he go? Is he gone forever? No need to fret, he’s back and he misses you too. Right after school let out in May, Crane took off to travel the world traveling from Colorado to Bulgaria. Come to the Scene SC House of Softcore tomorrow night for Austin’s first show back in South Carolina. It will be a special one.
Sometimes you read a show preview and you think, man I couldn’t have said it any better than that. Pat Wall’s write up of Dylan Sneed is on point this week.
Dylan Sneed – Two years ago, Dylan Sneed quit his desk job in Dallas, packed his belongings into his car and set out to find a new home. He landed in Hartsville, and Texodus, released earlier this year, recaps Sneed’s relocation efforts. Recorded in a rundown house in small-town Ehrhardt, S.C., Texodus is Americana the way it should be: Simple, honest and elegant without any pretense. An able guitarist and a gifted storyteller, Sneed possesses the erudite literacy of Cat Stevens and the temper of a sober Townes Van Zandt, imbuing his tunes with dust-bowl poignancy and small-town sentimentality. What Texodus lacks in polish, it more than makes up for in heart and wisdom, placing Sneed alongside the likes of Joe Pug as Americana’s best up-and-coming songwriters. With Hannah Miller, who’s reportedly playing her last Alien Carnival house concert as a Capital City resident; Miller’s been eyeing a move to Nashville for some time. Hannah Miller- Word on the street is that this will be Hannah Miller’s last Columbia appearance before she takes off for Nashville. I would be sad, but I’m really excited for her and looking forward to seeing her and James succeed there. There are a lot of people in Columbia that really appreciate Hannah Miller’s music, but in my opinion there aren’t enough. Nashville is one big hand shaking party. They hear your music, they like it, say we’re gonna sign you to a record deal and make you a star. Two weeks later you’re touring with George Strait and more worried about the fact that they messed up the type of cheeses you asked for on your rider and you’re gluing furniture to the ceilings of hotel rooms in Des Moines, Iowa. The real question is will Hannah make James trim his beard before the CMT music awards next year. Stay tuned to Scene SC to find out. And come hang out with us at the Alien Carnival house this weekend.
