Tomorrow night Wylie will be playing a show with Dewi Sant and Older Brother to end mountain top removal. Mountaintop removal mining is a process where coal companies blow the tops off mountains and dump them into nearby valleys burying streams, as a result the communities surrounding these sites suffer from poisoned drinking water, flooding, damaged buildings from blasting, and destruction of the Appalachian Mountains. Over 500 mountains have been destroyed by this mining.
Appalachian Voices and Restoring Eden have teamed up to bring a line-up of concerts across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic to raise awareness about the impacts of mountaintop removal in Appalachia. While mountaintop removal mining does not occur here in South Carolina, we have a very direct connection to the practice- South Carolina Electric and Gas is burning mountaintop removal coal from Kentucky and West Virginia for electricity. Restoring Eden campaign coordinator Anna Jane Joyner believes, “People from Charleston should not be forced to hurt others and destroy mountains and streams just to turn on the lights.”
