Last year, Thom Yorke named Here We Go Magic his favorite act at Glastonbury Festival (for those who don’t know, Glastonbury Festival is probably the biggest music festival in the world, taking place in Pilton, England). I happened to be at this festival and randomly stumbled upon the Park Stage, a wonderful stage in a park surrounded by hippies selling food, clothing, etc (by etc. I mean a plethora of drugs). Here We Go Magic were playing when I wandered upon this stage, and while I wouldn’t say they were the BEST, they were pretty damn amazing.
Obviously once I got home, I got their second album Pigeons and thoroughly enjoyed it but let me tell you, this EP showcases their talent a whole lot better. It has influences ranging from Grizzly Bear to Phil Collins. It’s dreamy, poppy, and folksy all at the same time. The second song “Hands In The Sky” sounds very similar to british band Wild Beasts (check em out if you haven’t already) but they put their own magic twist on it. “Hollywood” is a beautiful song with dreamy Bon Iver-sounding vocals. You can tell that singer Luke Temple wanted to try something else with his vocals on this EP and he does it extremely well.
Their album Pigeons is a lot more upbeat and rock-y but I really like the fact that this whole EP is mostly slow, beautiful, soft and everything I could want to listen to. This EP comes out on May 10th from Secretly Canadian Records and I would highly recommend it. Secretly Canadian definitely have their shit on lock, featuring artists such as Jens Lekman, Yeasayer, Little Scream, and now Here We Go Magic.
They are also playing at Local 506 in Carrboro on May 17th, and I for one know I will be there.
