I grew up in Greenville and all of my family still lives there so I know a little bit about what is going on in the world of music there. The upstate seems to be doing better than it used to, but it still has a long way to go. Luckily The Channel is giving rock bands a place to play and fans to a place to go and I just found a cool singer songwriter series at Coffee Underground.
The Acoustic Seen takes place every Tuesday and Friday night at Coffee Underground in Greenville and is put on by Dry Ridge Productions. They are a Non Profit put together to help promote original acoustic music in the upstate. They have been doing this since 1997.
The website says they have a two hour radio show.
Underground Folk Radio – This weekly, 2-hour radio show focuses on today’s independent contemporary folk artists and informs the public of the area’s live music happenings. We are temporarily off the air but hope to resume broadcasting one day. (click for our last seasons playlists.)
I’m not sure where the link is to that, but you can probably look around and find it. I’m planning on giving it a listen, because it sounds right up my alley.
It is really good to see these kinds of groups together to help promote each other so if you are in the Greenville area and are looking for somewhere to get your music heard go out to Coffee Underground in downtown Greenville and give it a listen.
Here is an upcoming schedule of events.

August 2008
Niel Brooks
with Hannah Baker opening
Friday, August 1
8:30 p.m.
$5
www.myspace.com/nielbrook Niel’s songs straddle different domains that mix the personal with the universal accompanied by his rootsy guitar. His is the musician’s love of uniqueness with ingrained southern-appreciation for a story told efficiently and well as in “Woody Guthrie (Where Have You Gone)”, a song that mixes oblique political references like “There’s a crow in the witch-corn/And the devil’s in the barn” with a clarion call for the spirit of Guthrie to return. It is the sound of an artist wishing that giants would once again walk the earth, but it’s also the sound of a nation seeking its lost voice.
www.myspace.com/hannahbakermusic Hannah says of her music, “I make music in the hopes that one of my songs will comfort someone the way that “Girl from the North Country,” “Across the Universe,” and countless others have comforted me. I put great stock in the literary merit of a song, so I hope my lyrics are to your liking.” They remind me of an early Janis Ian.

Josh Montgomery

8:30 p.m.

www.myspace.com/joshmontgomery Josh Montgomery is poised to come into his own. He’s as much a student of some of the world’s best players — he’s a fan of guitar gods Steve Vai and Joe Satriani — as much as he’s a player/performer himself. And the beauty of Josh Montgomery is that while he revels in his vast list of influences, he dishes out tasty originals that showcase a mature blend of rock, blues, pop and acoustic soul.
